Schein: Your ideas are known for their originality, and I’m sure you have a lot of them. It really does change your perspective, which is something I try to do with every book I write. So I went out of my way to thank the people who paved the road and the ones who painted the white line in the middle of the road so the truck driver wouldn’t crash. And then I realized the truck driver couldn’t do his job without the road. I was tracking down and thanking the truck driver who delivers the coffee. Before long, I was heading to South America to thank the farmer who grew the beans.

So with that in mind, I decided to thank a thousand people who helped make it possible for me to have that cup of coffee and to go to great lengths to do it. And it’s something I’ve always taken for granted. But at some point, it occurred to me how much work goes into making it possible for me to have that cup of coffee. For example, Thanks a Thousand started with a very simple thing…my morning cup of coffee. But by being extreme in executing a book, it really helps with what you just asked about. In fact, I think extremism can be super-dangerous, especially politically. Ironically, I’m not an extreme person at all. How do manage to make that happen so regularly?ĪJ Jacobs: For me, it’s just about taking an idea and pushing it as far as it’ll go.
